Changes to my study programme
Universities are important places where thought and knowledge are developed. They should serve the needs of communities and the country and be useful in developing answers and solutions to today's challenges. I believe, however, that universities have become distant from their communities. They have ceased to dialogue with what is happening today. In my opinion, this can be seen in the way the curriculum is constituted.
Higher education should be as broad and comprehensive as possible. However, my university curriculum is made up of many subjects that are almost pure fillers. I believe that many subjects are not up to date. Instead of producing knowledge, the university has become a space for the reproduction of old-fashioned and overvalued subjects and theories. On the other hand, the length of the degree course is very long.
One thing I really appreciate is the infrastructure of the university and the enormous number of complementary courses that can be taken. For example, I like to play tennis and, before the pandemic, I could go and play at a club in Quinta Normal for free.
The pandemic has brought the topic of online education. This has meant an almost total reinvestment of education as we understood it before. I think that despite the problems it has raised it has brought different benefits. For example: it has democratised access to university courses and programmes for students who are not from the centre of the country; it has considerably reduced travel times; it has made it possible to take courses from other parts of the world; and so on and so forth.
From my point of view, I think the pandemic has accelerated changes that were already taking place in the world. I think that education in the future can be thought of in a hybrid way: that there will be presential classes and also online instances. With regard to learning, I believe that the university has to return to being a space for the production of knowledge and stop reproducing the same thing year after year. This means that teaching techniques must change and introduce the value of thinking and creativity in university education.
I think the pandemic will end in two or three years, so in the future we are going to get used to the online class format, so that education is taught in the way you mention, that is, hybrid: face-to-face. face-to-face classes and also online.
