ENGLISH LANGUAGE CHALLENGES

Learning English in pandemics has not been an easy task. I believe that the learning of any language depends on the way it is used in its different dimensions: speaking, listening, writing and reading. For me it has been complicated to attend synchronous classes because of the high academic load I have had this semester. However, I think that through the blog posts, I have been able to make progress in my writing in English. At the beginning, I didn't measure the length of sentences, which is different in English and Spanish. In Spanish, you tend to write long sentences, with lots of commas in between, and sometimes they tend to be very redundant. When I write university papers, I try to keep my style more synthetic and simple. I don't like sentences that are too long. But in English sentences are very short! Learning to be synthetic when writing in English has helped me to improve my writing style in Spanish as well.  As for the aspects of my English that need to be improved...

Changes to my study programme

Universities are important places where thought and knowledge are developed. They should serve the needs of communities and the country and be useful in developing answers and solutions to today's challenges. I believe, however, that universities have become distant from their communities. They have ceased to dialogue with what is happening today. In my opinion, this can be seen in the way the curriculum is constituted.  Higher education should be as broad and comprehensive as possible. However, my university curriculum is made up of many subjects that are almost pure fillers. I believe that many subjects are not up to date. Instead of producing knowledge, the university has become a space for the reproduction of old-fashioned and overvalued subjects and theories. On the other hand, the length of the degree course is very long. One thing I really appreciate is the infrastructure of the university and the enormous number of complementary courses that can be taken. For example...

Blog post 6- Postgraduate Studies

The idea of studying after graduation has always been in my head. I have also thought about doing an exchange, but due to the pandemic I believe will no longer be able to do it. This is why doing a postgraduate degree is an idea that excites me. I would like to do it outside the country, not so much for academic reasons, but because of my desire to see new places and live outside my comfort zone for a while. Spain and Germany are two countries that interest me a lot to do a postgraduate degree. I have heard very good comments about life in Spain: the people are very nice, the culture is very diverse and the atmosphere is very pleasant. On the other hand, I can speak German and I have family in Germany that I would like to be able to visit. However, if I am honest, I wouldn’t live with my family, but I would like to stay in a place where I could feel completely independent. Regarding to postgraduate studies, I want to do a master’s degree related to psychology, particularly psyc...

My future job

Many ideas come to mind when I think of a job that I would like to do in the future. To be honest, I wouldn't want to imagine myself in a job for the rest of my life. Instead, I would like to have many experiences throughout my life, which allow me to know different areas and realities.  Currently, I am studying psychology and the area that interests me the most is within clinical psychology. I see myself working in the public service, in hospitals, health centers, etc., or also in a private practice. The truth is that I would like to be able to combine types of work. For example, I would like to be able to serve as a clinical psychologist in a private way and also work in some area of public service or other service.  However, beyond my ambitions as a psychologist, I do not see myself working there all my life, sitting in a room attending to people. I am a very restless person and I really want to travel and see many places in my life. I have thought, for example, that I wo...

my life during the pandemic

I still remember when in January 2020 I heard the news, still distant, of a virus that had been unleashed in a city, whose name I had never heard, in China. It seemed to be another chapter in a story that, I thought, I would know about only through the news or social networks. It is incredible to think that we have already been stuck in a pandemic for more than a year that has had such a reach throughout the world. At the beginning of the quarantine, everything was very new. I remember I had a class stoppage for almost a month and a half at the beginning of the year. During that time I took advantage of doing many things: I dedicated myself to cooking at home, reading books, walking my dog every day. I think he has been the happiest with the quarantines, because I spent a lot of time with him and I walk him every day sacredly. I believe that with the pandemic many doors and paths are opened. Some were already being developed and now they have finished consolidating, such as rem...

My favourite movie

I love movies, even though I'm not a movie buff. I am bad at remembering the names of actors, actresses, directors, etc., so I only remember my impression of the movies I watch. I don't have a particular favorite genre. Lately, during the pandemic, I have seen little cinema due to lack of time, so I have tried to see good things when I could. I saw the father a few weeks ago and loved it. Hopkins's performance is sublime and the story is very well told. I remember that a few years ago I went to see a play in Santiago called the father, based on the original play. I leave you an interesting fact in case you did not know: the director of the father is the playwright who wrote the play.

My holidays

Image
I remember when I went to a place near  Caburgua's lake, in the south of Chile, with my family in summer 2018. We rented a very beautiful house located on a hill. It had many rooms, which was perfect for us, because we were a big group. There was my father, his wife Marcela with her mother and sister -who came with her daughter-, her three children and a boyfriend of one of them, my two sisters, my girlfriend at the time and me.  It was very fun being all together in the same place. Some times it could get a little bit crowded beeing with so many people, but aterall we had a good group relationship. We did many different activities such as -of course- bathing in the lake, trekkins, going to the towns near the area, for saying a few of them. I would say thtat was one of my best holidays because, first of all, we were in a beautiful place, surroundend by nature and the wild. Secondly, I enjoyed having time with my family, which has grown so much, since my father is in a ...
